Wooden Building of the Year in Estonia: Best facade 2010

Sõmeru Community Centre is located near the North-Estonian town of Rakvere on an open field near the highway in Sõmeru parish. The parish commissioned a multipurpose community centre that would house the parish administration, a library, a community club for hobby groups, and a 190-seat auditorium.

In 2004, the Sõmeru competition jury appreciated the design for its multi-purpose functionality and playful coherence with natural environment and architectural ingenuity. When the building was completed in 2010, Salto AB was awarded with Annual Award of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia in 2010, Estonian National Culture Award in 2010 as well as Wooden Building of the Year in Estonia: Best facade in 2010 for the Sõmeru Community Centre.

“For its decoration and roof shape, the building has been compared to a waving field. And indeed, the concept of Sõmeru Community Centre stems from a metaphor of a hay field.”

Carl-Dag Lige, an architecture critic in Maja, 14.II.2011
