In 2013, Salto AB was commissioned to design three apartment buildings near the prominent sports arena Kalev in Tallinn centre. The Kalev stadium hosts the most important international summer sports games as well as the National Dancing Festivals in Estonia since 1955. In 2018, two out of three apartment buildings have been completed, and the third building is in final design process. The apartment buildings are designed to create an urbane environment and spatial structure. Therefore, together the buildings create an intimate courtyard as well as a festive entrance area to the stadium gate.
The largest of the planned apartment buildings is bordered with a business area on the active Staadion street, and thus, it leaves more privacy to the residential side of the building. The building has 45 apartments with 2–5 rooms and 3,1 metre high ceilings, and six outstanding business spaces. Most of the building’s volume evolves around a standardised floor plan. However, the South side has unique flats with terraces. While on the other hand, the smaller building that has 32 apartments with 1–4 rooms on the Võistluse street, blurres the borders between the new and already existing street structure. This building’s structure progresses around a central hallway. The facade is given a characteristic appearance by creating optical effect with added wooden structures. Each flat of all buildings is designed to have a balcony or a terrace, a storage room and a parking spot in the underground car park.
